Abstract
The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 is a federally funded program that has established guidelines for laboratories to follow in order to assure quality and reliability of all laboratory testing on specimens obtained from humans. A successful quality assurance program is one of the many requirements enforced to ensure the lab is providing the best possible results. Part of quality assurance parameters comprises of cyto-histological correlations and documentation of continuing education by proficiency through independent study. In this study, quality assurance activities were explored and accomplished by (1) a detailed presentation highlighting the cyto-histological correlation on two difficult cases underlining any discordance if any between the histopathologic and cytologic diagnosis, and documentation of proficiency in cytopathology through independent study via (2) critical evaluation of published scientific articles and (3) putting together an extensive review paper entitled "The Role of Molecular Testing in Thyroid Cytology."
